Lions are Sight Savers for Children by offering Free Early Childhood Vision ScreeningsWe offer a screening process which can take 5 seconds or less to complete and can help the 1 in 20 children in the U.S. that have a serious eye disorder which can lead to a lifetime of impaired vision or even blindness. Early vision testing when children are between 6 months up to 5 years old enables detection when it is still effective to treat a child. There is a 95% cure rate if vision problems are detected early. What Parents & Caregivers Need to Know: 70% of children that have trouble learning and diagnosed with a learning disability can attribute it to some kind of vision problem. It is estimated that 1 in 4 children has a vision issue, usually not visibly observable to parents. Many parents wrongly assume pediatricians rigorously check for vision problems. Most pediatricians have limited training in identifying vision problems. Screenings are important even for children who receive top-notch medical care. Many parents believe their child receives adequate vision testing in school. Usually these tests consist of reading an eye chart which are dependent on the child's cooperation. 78% of preschool age children do not receive any type of vision screening. This is the important age group to detect a vision issue when treatment is most successful. Our computer assisted screening device can be used on preverbal children as young as 6 months of age since it does not rely on interaction from the child. The earlier the child is diagnosed, the higher the success of treatment and cure rate. Some eye disorders if diagnosed after the age of five, treatment may not be as effective, and vision impairment may be permanent, thus early screening is vital! The computerized vision screening using the Pediavision Spot autorefraction device requires no physical contact or eye drops, and takes just seconds to perform. Parents receive an instant printout with test results indicating if their child needs referral to a Eye Care Provider for a follow-up eye examination |
